The Building Commission will visit eight towns in regional Western Australia between March and May to update the local building industries on matters relating to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and roof compliance.

The 2017 regional seminars are scheduled in Bunbury (morning session fully booked) and Busselton (morning session fully booked), Albany, Kalgoorlie and Northam in March, Geraldton and Karratha in April and Broome in May.

The morning session will cover future initiatives relating to the BCA; product certification and technical interpretation of common queries. This session will also cover the minimum level of documentation required for roofing.

The afternoon session will be dedicated to a presentation about checking roof compliance on site. This follows the release of the Building Commission’s 2016 general inspection report into sheet metal-clad, timber-framed roof construction in WA, which identified that insufficient roof tie down is an area of construction that needs improving.

“The Building Commission carries out regular audits and inspections, which help us to identify potential problem areas and work with the industry to deal with them before they pose a serious threat,” Building Commissioner Peter Gow said.

“While the issues relating to inadequate roof tie downs are not confined to any particular area of Western Australia, we are committed to sharing information on the findings of our compliance activities and the Building Code of Australia with building industries across the State to ensure the high quality of workmanship we typically see in regional areas continues.

“We encourage local building industries and anyone interested to register for our regional sessions and be updated on all the useful information on offer.”

Further information and online registration for all sessions is below or available on the 'Events and seminars' webpage or by phoning 1300 489 099 or emailing bcevents@commerce.wa.gov.au for assistance. Both sessions are free of charge but registration is essential and places are limited.
