Consumer Protection trip to Norseman and Esperance

Consumer fraud prevention, product safety inspections and price checks are some of things that will be happening when Consumer Protection visits Norseman and Esperance from tomorrow.

Senior Regional Officer for the Goldfields Ivo da Silva will be heading from his usual base in Kalgoorlie to Norseman and Esperance 1-3 June 2016.

“I’ll be going door to door but unlike a salesperson I’ll be offering Do Not Knock stickers that people can display to tell uninvited salespeople to leave their property,” he said.

“I’ll also be letting people know about their right to a 10 business day cooling off period when agreeing to a deal on their doorstep, if they didn’t ask the business to come and sell them something or carry out a job.

“Additionally I’ll be speaking to schoolchildren about scams, shopping rights (including our free app iShopWA) and contracts. Plus I’ll be doing some interviews with the local media to get the word out.”

As well as raising awareness in the consumer community Mr da Silva will be assisting businesses with information to help them comply with laws that are relevant to their industry.

“There are some businesses that need licences such as real estate agents, motor vehicle sellers and repairers. Also fuel retailers need to report prices to FuelWatch in line with the Petroleum Products Pricing Act,” he said.

“Under the Australian Consumer Law sellers of good and services need to be doing the right thing and one way I’ll be helping them is by giving out signs that they can display at the till, outlining a lawful returns policy which allows consumers to get a refund, repair or replacement when a product is faulty.”
