Motor vehicle dealers and repairers law review: Stage two consultation paper

Consumer Protection sought the community’s views about options for reforming the laws regulating motor vehicle dealers, yard managers, salespersons and motor vehicle repairers operating in WA.
Consumer Protection is reviewing the laws which apply to motor vehicle dealers, yard managers, sales representatives and motor vehicle repairers operating in Western Australia.
In undertaking the review, our goal is to ensure the laws are appropriate in the current marketplace and are operating in the interests of both consumers and business.
The review also provides an opportunity to look at ways of improving the legislation, removing unnecessary regulation and reducing red tape for business.
Current consultation phase:
The 2015 consultation paper reports on the earlier consultation and considers a range of options for reform. The review provides a vital opportunity to have your say about options for improving the regulation of repairers and dealers. You are strongly encouraged to provide input to the review.
Reform options under consideration
Full details in relation to the range of reform options under consideration are included in the consultation paper. Care will be taken to weigh up the costs and benefits of the various options for reform currently under consideration.
The following are examples of some of the key issues addressed in the consultation paper:
- The licensing of motor vehicle salespersons.
- The categories of motor vehicle dealer licensing.
- Cooling off periods for motor vehicle purchases.
- The types of repair work covered by motor vehicle repairers’ legislation.
The first stage of the motor vehicle dealers and repairers law review was conducted in August 2013.
