2017 Work Safety Awards Finalists

 

The five winners of the prestigious 2017 Work Safety Awards Western Australia were announced this at the Work Safety Awards Breakfast held on 6 October 2017.

The awards recognise outstanding OSH management, solutions and innovation in Western Australian workplaces.  

There are six categories for the awards

  • Best workplace safety and health management system
  • Safety and health invention of the year
  • Best solution to a specific workplace safety and health issue
  • Best initiative to encourage worker engagement in safety and health
  • Best contribution to safety and health by an individual or team
  • Safety and health representative of the year

RAC has an integrated safety and health management system with commitment by the executive team and senior leaders and a positive and collaborative approach to risk management. 

The system has focused on critical risks, workplace health and reducing the risk of injury in manual tasks.

RAC has consistently achieved WorkSafe Plan Platinum certification.

Jennie Milne General Manager Human Resources said that RAC are thrilled to win the award for best workplace safety and health management system.  

One of RAC’s values is Keeping Safe, for both our people and our members.  Awards such as this, recognise the positive change we have made to make health and safety part of what we do, every day; and in doing so provide us with the opportunity to celebrate success.

Fremantle Commercial Diving is a supplier of inshore and inland commercial diving services, where a key service is cleaning and inspecting water tanks.

These large tanks often have varied levels of fall prevention in place, and Fremantle Commercial Diving wanted to provide their workers with a reliable fall arrest and rescue system.

They consulted with The Lifting Company, and after significant research and development, the Skyhook Mark 4 was designed and built.  The Skyhook is a unique truck-mounted fall arrest and rescue system.

The Kimberley Ports Authority is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Port of Broome, which required extensive refurbishment to the outer berth fender system.

Repair work was usually completed using an underdeck trolley system, but the repairs needed alternative access.

A fender platform was designed to eliminate hazards such as falls from heights, body stressing and trip hazards.

Best initiative to encourage worker engagement in safety and health

Zero Harm courages is an initiative developed by the City of Cockburn as a way of empowering their employees and reinvigorating their safety culture.

The aim of this initiative was to engage workers to have the courage to: 

  • report every incident and near miss
  • intervene if they saw something unsafe; and
  • stop work if they deem it to be unsafe

Presentations were delivered to all employees giving examples of how they could use each of the courages.  The City of Cockburn then reinforced the message by printing merchandise with the courages on them, integrated the courage's into their daily language and awarded  people displaying the courages. As time went on they saw more and more employees acting on these courage's and speaking the language.  It has now become 'the way things are done' at the City of Cockburn.

When presented with the award  Samantha Baron thanked the employees of the City of Cockburn for embracing the Zero Harm Courages, without their participation and commitment to step up and live each of the courages the program would not have been such a success.'

Alison has designed the CADDS safety and health management system to fit the workplace culture.

Her safety system is user friendly and has a high level of engagement with workers and managers.

She is creative in her role, and has initiated a number of safety campaigns.
